Shark Diving
I
went Shark Cage Diving last Wednesday and I can honestly say it was
one of the most incredible days I have ever had. The viewing is superb at this time of year with lots of sharks and great visibility.
We saw over 10 sharks right from the time of arrival at the location
near Dyer Island, off the coast of Gaans Bay (about 2 hours drive
from Cape Town). Everything about the trip was faultless- the expertly
run operation, the ultra modern boat, the knowledgeable friendly guide
and staff; even the weather- it was a warm sunny day with gentle rolling
swell. I got some great shots of the Great Whites approaching the
cage and from the boat- I never thought I'd get so close to such as
amazing animal. I was worried being a surfer, that the experience
would put me off going back into the water, but the opposite is true-
seeing them in their natural environment has totally changed my perception
of this awesome creature.
Shark
cage diving is now highly regulated with only 8 operators allowed
to work in the area. The boats are also restricted on the amount and
type of chum and bait allowed. Once it's used up, the trip is effectively
over so there is definitely no incentive for the crew to feed the
sharks.
I
really got the impression being there, that it is a totally unique
environment with the sharks being in such a high concentration around
the seal colony. The sharks are inquisitive though non aggressive and
are naturally present in the ecosystem as opposed to being attracted
to the boats for food. Within the safe confines of the cage, the viewer
is virtually invisible to the sharks who simply come for a look before
gliding away effortlessly into the blue.
